Situated along the banks of the Frying Pan River, Basalt is a picturesque town blending small-town charm with modern amenities. Boasting a vibrant art scene, numerous outdoor activities, and a quaint downtown area lined with boutique shops and eateries, Basalt appeals to both locals and visitors seeking a relaxed mountain lifestyle. Named for the basaltic rock in what is now Basalt Mountain (formerly Black Mountain), Basalt was first settled as “FryingPan,” as demand for charcoal in Aspen led to kilns being built along the river, along with a tent housing settlement for the smelters. When the railroad came through (approx 1887), Basalt developed into a railroad town, then known as Aspen Junction. Sitting pretty in mid-valley, Basalt appeals to many for a variety of reasons: Gold medal fishing in the Frying Pan River; a hub for dozens of mountain bike trails; access to boating and watersports at the Ruedi Reservoir. Crown Mountain Park is a favorite spot of mine, hosting outdoor concerts, local sports, off-leash dog park, BMX bike course, and trails along the river. Situated in both Eagle and Pitkin Counties, with approximately 4000 residents, Basalt is 18 miles from Aspen, 15 miles from Carbondale, and 21 miles from Glenwood Springs.
